Girl Meets World Star Rowan Blanchard Opens Up to Fans: "I Identify as Queer"

Actress and Girl Meets World  star Rowan Blanchard opened up to fans on her Twitter about her sexuality, telling them that while she's create herself mostly attracted to boys, she identifies as queer and refuses to be labeled. 

"In my existence – only ever liked boys," she wrote in a tweet draft she screencapped. "However I personally don't wanna label myself as straight, gay or whateva so I am not gonna give myself labels to stick with – just existing." 

According to the Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, homosexual is an umbrella term:

It includes anyone who a) wants to identify as queer and b) who feels somehow outside of the societal norms in regards to gender or sexuality. This, therefore, could include the person who highly values queer theory concepts and would rather not identify with any particular label, the gender fluid bisexual, the gender fluid heterosexual, the questioning LGBT person, and the person who just doesn't feel like they quite fit in to societal norms and wants to bond with a society over that.

It is a fluid label as opposed to a solid

If you were on a certain part of the Internet around 2015, Rowan Blanchard’s reputation might precede her. At age 14, the then-Disney Channel luminary wrote an essay on the importance of intersectional feminism which went viral, and wrote regularly for Rookie magazine. She gave a speech on feminism and gender equality at the UN Women and US National Committee’s annual conference that alike year, as a member of #TeamHeForShe, which Emma Watson also lead. Time magazine named her one of the most influential teens of 2015. Suddenly, she was looked to as an activist, incredibly poised, articulate and ready to shake things up. That spotlight hasn’t been without its pressures, causing Rowan to state in interviews that she had to reevaluate the role of social media and that form of online activism in her life.

Rowan Blanchard is proving once again that she is wise beyond her years.

The 14-year-old Girl Meets World actress has never been one to reserved away from mature, important conversations. As it turns out, this weekend was no different when the Disney Channel star opened up about her sexuality.

In a Twitter post shared early Saturday, Rowan called herself "queer," but also expressed the importance of not labeling others.

"In my life—only ever liked boys," she shared online. "However I personally don't wanna label myself as straight, male lover or whateva so I am not gonna give myself labels to stick with—just existing;)"

She continued, "Yes, [I'm] open to liking any gender in future is why I identify as queer."

Rowan Blanchard had to deal with a lot of haters after going universal with something very private.

In January, the 14-year-old star of the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World opened up about her sexuality for the first time on social media, saying she identified as "queer."

"In my life—only ever liked boys," she said. "However I personally don't wanna label myself as straight, homosexual or whateva so I am not gonna give myself labels to stick with—just existing;)"

She told Wonderlandmagazine in an interview published this week that she received several inaccurate comments about her tweets, while other responses were borderline homophobic.

"I'm okay with it now, but I still understand that I was allowing people to comment on something that's very personal," she said. "The first day I tweeted about it, it was definitely scary to spot people commenting about things that literally have nothing to do with them."
