Canton gay bars
The Sociologist Speaks
Gay bars and other forms of queer nightlife are an vital part of many LGBTQIA+ people’s lives. Queer nightlife is often a root of joy, lgbtq+ fest, community, visibility, guard, care, and belonging.
But how do asexual people experience gay nightlife?
This is a question I analyze in my latest publication in The Sociological Quarterly, which you can scan here.
As I’ve argued before, asexuality is—or at least can be—queer. Yet, asexuality exists at the margins of not only the heteronormative world, but also the queer nature. That marginality makes asexual perspectives especially valuable, but it also means that asexuality’s place in the broader lgbtq+ community can sense shaky.

I drew on 23 interviews with asexual individuals to examine how asexuality’s tenuous place in the broader homosexual community shapes asexual experiences of homosexual nightlife.
What I found is that uncertain queer belonging was core to understanding those experiences. I also initiate that some asexual avoid queer nightlife altogether. Perhaps most compellingly, I also found that some asexual r

The corner of North Charles and Eager streets just ain’t what it used to be. Sure, rainbow flags still fly outside of Grand Central Club, but it’s on borrowed time. Across the street, where Club Hippo once hosted epic bingo nights, show tunes karaoke, and hip-hop parties, is now the standard bat signal of gentrification—a CVS.

“Years ago, queer bars were secure zones when gays were in dread of being pound up,” says Don Davis, who owned Grand Central for nearly 30 years until new owners took over earlier this year. “Once people started encounter online, we beaten a lot of business.”
Beyond matchmaking websites and LGBTQ-friendly dating apps, the movement to legalize same-sex marriage in 2015 also played a part in curtailing gay-bar business. “Our group was able to get married and start a family, and the necessity to go out and meet people just wasn’t there,” says Chris Jennings, who runs events and marketing for the newly reopened Baltimore Eagle. “Plus, you need to move with trends.
